So, everyone’s buzzing about the subconscious mind these days—and trust me, it’s not just hype. Science shows that it drives 95% of our lives, meaning most of what you do, feel, and react to is all happening on autopilot. Ever caught yourself wondering, “Why the hell am I like this?” Yeah, you can thank your subconscious for that.
When you start diving into therapy or somatic healing, you begin to realize that pretty much all of your behaviors, beliefs, and coping mechanisms stem from this hidden part of your brain. Your subconscious is the puppet master pulling the strings behind the scenes. But here’s the kicker—if you want real, lasting change, you’ve got to learn how to work WITH it, not against it. Most people? They’re out here trying to fight their subconscious every step of the way. That’s why every time they try to lose weight, fall in love, or quit a bad habit, they keep slipping back into the same old patterns. They’re stuck in a loop because they’re using their conscious mind to try and change things, but it’s the subconscious that’s really calling the shots.
In this post, I’m sharing the real tea from my $10,000 healing journey—how I figured out that while talk therapy was a good start, it just wasn’t cutting deep enough and what I have learned training as a Holistic Wellness Coach, Integrative Health Practitioner and the founder of one of the biggest healing podcasts globally (OPENHOUSE).
What the Hell Is the Subconscious Mind?
Let’s break it down: your subconscious mind is like the hard drive of your life. It’s logged every single thing you’ve gone through up until today. Its main job? To keep you alive. And it does that by sticking to what it knows—people, places, and things that are familiar. Because, guess what? You’ve survived those before, so your brain figures, “Why mess with what works?” But here’s where it gets tricky. This part of your brain is operating on some pretty basic settings. It’s always on high alert, ready to trigger your fight-or-flight response, even when you’re not in any real danger. Mentally, it’s storing all your memories and habits, quietly steering your actions without you even noticing. Spiritually? This is where your creativity and intuition live, pushing you toward what feels right—even if you don’t always understand why.
When Did This All Start?
You know how people say, “Kids are like sponges”? Well, they’re not wrong. Your subconscious mind starts forming in the last trimester of pregnancy and goes full throttle until you’re about seven years old. During this time, your brain is like a sponge, soaking up everything around it. And because your brain is operating mostly in slower brainwave states, like theta (which is all about deep learning and absorption), everything gets imprinted on you. These early experiences set the stage for the subconscious programming that runs the show in adulthood. The older you get, the more locked-in these pathways become, which is why it’s so important to understand how this stuff got wired in the first place if you want to change it later.
My Journey to Uncovering the Subconscious
Honestly, I thought I had it all figured out—until I started doing the deep work on my subconscious. I uncovered all these deep-seated beliefs like “I’m hard to love,” “I’m too emotional,” and “Love always comes with conflict.” Surprise, surprise, these beliefs had me chasing after unavailable men and looking for validation in all the wrong places. I was stuck in a cycle of short-term fixes that left me feeling empty in the long run. But after digging deep in therapy, I discovered 7 Ways to Reprogram Your Subconscious Mind—and it’s been a game-changer.
7 Ways to Program Your Subconscious Mind
Okay, let’s get into it…
1. First, Take Radical Responsibility for Your Life
Your subconscious mind is going to want you to stay the same (we’ve already spoken about this) so you need to take radical responsibility for your life and say YES, I can change. It’s going to be uncomfortable, there are going to be days when your body is saying, ‘This doesn’t work,’ or ‘This is pointless,’ or ‘This is bullshit,’ but it’s about knowing that this is your subconscious mind wanting to keep you close to things of the past. And if you listen to that forever, you’ll never change.
2. Acknowledge You Can’t Rewire Until You Get the Foundations in Place
It's AMAZING that you are here, but somatic healing is not a silver bullet if you have a lifestyle primed for dysregulation. Before diving into deep emotional work, you need to lay the groundwork for your body and mind to function at their highest potential. You’re probably not breathing properly, eating properly, or sleeping properly. Watch our introduction to breathwork video to learn how more effective oxygenation can heal. Start prioritizing your sleep (aim to be in bed by 10 pm each night), nutrition (focus on a variety of non-processed, anti-inflammatory foods), and hydration (add electrolytes to your water where possible). Managing your blood sugar is crucial too—eat regularly, and if you have hormone issues, stop intermittent fasting now. Your nervous system is constantly on edge when blood sugar levels fluctuate, seeing these dips as threats. And guess what? When your body is in survival mode, it’s almost impossible to create new neural pathways and truly heal. Healing starts with giving your body what it needs as if it were a small child.
3. Identify Your NEIs (Negative Emotional Imprints)
Before you can rewire anything, you’ve got to figure out what’s holding you back. NEIs are those deep-rooted limiting beliefs full of negative energy, stored in your nervous system when you were overwhelmed by whatever caused them in the first place.
4. Decide on Your PEIs (Positive Emotional Imprints)
Once you know what’s been holding you back, it’s time to flip the script. PEIs are the positive beliefs you want to rewire into your subconscious. This is where the magic happens.
5. Chill Out—Seriously (Reduce Cortisol)
Something very few online blogs will tell you is that you can’t start rewiring new beliefs or new experiences when you are in a high-stress state. This is because cortisol is the enemy here—it keeps you in survival mode, which is the exact opposite of where you need to be to make lasting changes. That means getting your stress levels down. You can start to reduce cortisol in your life by:
Daily Somatic Practices: Incorporate somatic exercises like shaking, breathwork, or gentle movement to release trapped stress and signal relaxation to your nervous system.
Reduce HIIT Exercise: Avoid overdoing HIIT; instead, focus on restorative exercises like weight lifting or Somatic Pilates, which tone your body while reducing stress and balancing hormones.
Prioritize Sleep: Ensure quality sleep by establishing a bedtime routine that promotes deep, restorative rest.
Mindful Eating: Choose whole foods that support adrenal health and stabilize blood sugar, avoiding excessive caffeine and sugar.
Set Boundaries: Reduce cortisol by saying no to draining activities and focusing on what brings you joy and peace.
Practice Gratitude: Regularly reflect on things you're grateful for to shift focus from stressors and lower cortisol levels.
Get Outside: Spend time in nature to naturally relieve stress and boost your mood.
6. Release Old Emotions to Clear Space for the New
To truly begin the process of transformation, it's essential to focus on releasing past energy. Dr. David Hawkins, PhD, conducted extensive research demonstrating the impact of stored emotional energy on our subconscious mind. All that stagnant, stuck energy from past trauma needs to be released, or it will continue to hold you back. Without this release, trying to rewire your subconscious mind using only your conscious efforts becomes much more challenging. One of my favorite ways to release old emotions is through somatic shaking. Somatic shaking is a powerful practice that helps you physically release trapped energy and emotions stored within your body. By intentionally shaking different parts of your body, you can activate your parasympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for rest and relaxation. This practice mimics the natural shaking response seen in animals after a stressful event, allowing you to discharge built-up tension and trauma. The result? A profound sense of relief, calm, and a deeper connection to your body. Regularly practicing somatic shaking can help you break free from old emotional patterns, making it easier to rewire your subconscious mind and embrace new, empowering beliefs.
7. Commit to Expressing Your Emotions More
The holistic wellness world knows this all too well—when you bottle up emotions, they don’t just disappear. Instead, they manifest physically in ways that ‘can’t be explained,’ like ‘hormone imbalances that we’re told are genetic’ or ‘chronic pain disorders that can’t be healed.’ Suppress your anger or intense emotions, and your HPA axis, sympathetic nervous system, and immune response go into overdrive. Your body starts reacting as if it’s facing a real threat, leading to chronic stress and disrupted health. And if you suppress this? These nervous system impulses have to go somewhere inside your biology, interfering with cellular functioning. The truth? Healing begins with small doses of emotional expression, even if it feels like the hardest thing you’ll ever do. Don't know where to start? Start by understanding how powerful somatic shaking can be, why it’s an evolutionary, natural healing mechanism, and how you can use it for just 5 minutes a day to start this process.
Time to Rewire Those Beliefs
Now that you've laid the foundation, it's time to start creating those new neural pathways. Here's what works:
Consistency: This is crucial for reprogramming the subconscious mind. Regular practice solidifies new beliefs and habits.
Tapping: By using acupressure points, you can release stuck emotions and reframe your thoughts, making it easier for your subconscious to accept new patterns.
Breathwork: Deep breathing helps your body and mind relax, creating a receptive state for new beliefs to take root.
Hypnosis: Dive deep into your subconscious to implant transformative ideas that can shift your mindset at its core.
Theta Affirmations: Leverage the power of the theta brainwave state to ensure that your affirmations penetrate deeply, creating lasting change.
Visualizations, Meditations, and Gratitude Practices: These are vital, but they must engage the subconscious mind rather than just the conscious mind for true transformation.
Tapping is incredibly effective for working with the subconscious because it combines physical touch with focused intention, allowing you to release emotional blocks and rewire your thoughts at a deeper level. Research has shown that tapping can reduce cortisol levels, making it easier for your mind to embrace new beliefs.
Breathwork supports subconscious rewiring by calming the nervous system and opening up the pathways for new ideas to be integrated. When you slow your breath, you signal safety to your body, which is essential for deep, lasting change.
Embrace Patience and Trust the Process
Reprogramming your subconscious mind is not an overnight fix; it’s a journey that requires patience and commitment. As you embark on this path, it’s essential to trust the process. Remember that every small step you take is a victory, even if the changes aren’t immediately visible. Your subconscious has been conditioned over years, so give yourself grace as you work to rewire it. Celebrate the progress, no matter how small, and stay committed to your practices. Over time, these consistent efforts will lead to profound and lasting transformation.
